If you have been looking for a low-cost rowing machine at the cheaper end of the market, then you may well have come across the ProForm 440R Rower.
This is actually one of the top-selling models right now in 2015, and one of the key benefits of this machine is that it can be used as both a rowing machine and a strength station.
However it has also received a number of mixed reviews, so before I discuss some of the pros and cons of this ProForm rower, let me start off by listing some of the main features and benefits of this product.
Features And Benefits Of The ProForm 440R Rower
- 8 levels of magnetic resistance
- can be used for cardio and strength training
- comes with large LCD monitor
- track time, distance, calories, strokes, etc
- soft-touch ergonomic rowing handle
- ergonomic padded seat
- pivoting pedals with adjustable straps
- folds away for easy storage
- accommodates users up to 250 lbs
- 5-year frame warranty
- 90-day parts and labor warranty
The ProForm 440R Rower has dimensions of 50 x 19.5 x 11 inches, however you obviously need a little more space than this if you’re going to perform your workout without hitting anything. So you should take into consideration the total footprint of this machine, which is 76.6 x 38.3 x 20.5 inches according to the ProForm website.
As mentioned above, the biggest selling point of the ProForm 440 is the fact that it comes with a low pulley station, which means that it can be used for both rowing workouts and strength training workouts.
By standing up and moving round to the front of the rower, you can then perform exercises such as bicep curls, deadlifts, deltoid raises and overhead tricep extensions, which will all help to build muscle and increase strength, and will complete your workout nicely because rowing is more suitable for fitness and toning.
There are a few more positive features that are also worth mentioning.
For example, this particular rowing machine provides you with 8 levels of magnetic resistance so that you can get a full range of workouts, and delivers a smooth rowing motion thanks to the inertia enhanced flywheel.
In addition, it also comes with a pretty good LCD display that is easy to read, and provides you with key data such as strokes per minute, total strokes, time, distance and calories burned.
Finally, this machine can accommodate users up to 250 lbs and folds away really easily when it is not being used. Plus it comes with a 5-year frame warranty in case anything goes wrong.
Unfortunately whilst some people are very happy with this machine, if you read some of the customer feedback on Amazon, you will see that this ProForm rower has also received a number of negative reviews as well.
The common complaint about this ProForm rower seems to be the strength and build of this machine because a few people have said that it broke after a few months of use, whilst others have pointed out that it’s not exactly the best quality, which is not unsurprising considering the low price tag.
So although it comes with a 5-year frame warranty, there is only a 90-day parts and labor warranty, which may present a problem if something goes wrong after this time has elapsed.
In addition to this, one other thing that a few people have complained about is the resistance because even at the highest setting, a few people have said that it was still a little too easy, which may be an issue if you are used to pushing yourself really hard.
It’s important to point out once again that this rowing machine has received a mixture of positive and negative reviews, but I have to mention both the pros and the cons in order to provide a balanced review.
I wouldn’t like to put anyone off buying this ProForm 440R Rower because this is quite a low-cost rowing machine compared to some of the gym-standard machines, and considering that many people have had no issues at all with this product, you could say that it represents fairly good value for money despite receiving a few mixed reviews.
However for roughly the same price you could buy yourself the Stamina Air Rower, which has far less reliability issues, and is one of the models that we named as one of the best rowing machines for home use.
