There is one particular rowing machine that has long been considered to be the best on the market, and that’s the Concept 2 Model D Rowing Machine, which is the one I want to review today.
This particular rower is often found in many gyms all over the country and is commonly used by Olympic athletes and professional rowers when they are not on the water, and the good news is that it now comes with the impressive Performance Monitor 5, which is the most advanced display console that they have produced so far.

Dimensions / Weight
This Concept 2 Model D Rowing Machine weighs 57 pounds (26 kg) and is approximately 8 feet x 2 feet when fully assembled. However you will need a space of at least 9 feet x 4 feet in order to fully complete your rowing strokes without hitting anything.
The Concept 2 Model D rower is a commercial, gym-standard rowing machine, so there are obviously a lot of positives.
For a start it is exceptionally well-made and is clearly built to last, which means that you can easily use it every day if you so wish. It also has an intelligent air resistance system that automatically adjusts the resistance based on the intensity of your rowing stroke, which therefore makes it easy to increase or decrease the resistance during your workout.
In addition, it now comes with the PM5 display unit (pictured right), which is a big improvement on the previous PM3 display that was included with the older models.
That’s because it comes with a backlit display and has a USB flash drive and on-board memory that can store over 1000 workouts. Plus it also comes with a lot more games, and is not only compatible with wireless heart rate monitoring, but also supports wired connectivity to computers and smartphones.
Furthermore, it is also worth pointing out that this display unit will help you monitor every aspect of your workout because it will display all of the key data such as speed, distance, pace, calories burned, watts, etc, and comes with lots of pre-set workouts for you to try.
So when you bear in mind that the workout itself is smooth and quiet and can be as challenging as you want it to be, and the machine itself is extremely solid and sturdy, it is easy to see why this particular rowing machine is so highly rated.
It is actually very hard to find any negatives because if you check out some of the comments that have been posted online, you will see that many people have been absolutely delighted with their purchase.
Indeed although I don’t own this particular machine myself, I have used this Concept 2 Model D machine in my local gym on numerous occasions and haven’t got a bad word to say about it because it really does provide you with an excellent full-body workout.
However the only real complaint concerns the seat because a few people have said that it can get a little uncomfortable after a while, particularly during longer workouts, but this can always be replaced if this becomes a problem for you.
Where To Buy The Concept 2 Model D Rowing Machine
If you would like to buy this Concept 2 Model D rower, it is available online from various sites including Amazon, where you can also read some of the customer reviews that have been posted so far.
It is available in a choice of two different colors (black or light gray), and they both come with a user manual, a guide to the PM5 display unit, chain oil, tools and assembly instructions.
Concept 2 Model D v Concept 2 Model E
It is worth mentioning that you can also pay a little more for the Concept 2 Model E Rowing Machine if you so wish.
There isn’t a great deal of difference between the two in all honesty, but the Model E is 6 inches higher off the ground, which makes it easier to get on and off for those people with knee or hip problems, and has a longer monitor arm, different shaped legs and is approximately 8 pounds heavier.
So this is probably the better option if you have mobility problems, but otherwise I would suggest saving yourself some money and going for the Model D because this is by far the most popular model.
